I shuddered when I read this.

US soldiers in combat could use an assist from a civilian workforce while trying to rebuild war-torn nations, President Barack Obama said Wednesday.

Speaking at a town hall in Racine, Wisconsin, Obama called for sending a "civilian expeditionary force" to Afghanistan and Iraq to help overburdened military troops build infrastructure. His remarks were first reported by The Associated Press. Raw Story

"So what I’m trying to say is, don’t put all the burden on the military. Make sure that we’ve got a civilian expeditionary force," said the president, adding that the civilian force would build schools, bridges and roads in regions cleared by the military as safe.

First, comes the question of whether there exists a substantial number of saps who would go for this. Second, it's a guarantee you can take to the bank, that they would die like flies. Third, is the truly Dark Lord sort of shit, where these civilian go-getters morph into irregular einsatzgruppen.

I am creeped out in a big way by this, Such a proposal leans in the general direction of degeneracy.

Would this decision lead to the never-leaving, ever-renewing, perpetual occupation of Afghanistan? The horror, the horror. `Copeland

"cleared by the military as safe."

In WWII, my stepfather was assigned to a group occupying an island cleared of Japanese by the Marines.

The first time that he was in a chow line, he was looking around at the trees and he spotted a sniper up in a palm tree. Sniper shot him.

Safe, there is no safe in Afghanistan.

Sounds to me more like a plot to get rid of the higher educated unemployables, so the true poor will be available at ever decreasing wages.

No, I don't trust Obama. I wouldn't let him out of my sight with my wallet.

I think this is showing the absolute failure of american military to function as an intelligent modern western army, it reflects the continual criticism the brits had of u.s forces in iraq that they made everyones job more dangerous by being unable to intelligently moderate force in terms of winning hearts and minds.
This idea seems to be a sort of good cop bad cop approach but the real headache would be the hatred and mistrust that would arise between the american military and civillian outfits. Also remember when the U.N peacekeepers are in an area they become the local black market, the local drug dealers the local rapists of young girls and boys just like any conventional force.
As an aside this does seem to be another window into Obama regimes dissatisfaction with american military top brass power and inflexibility, bit of a power struggle going on there in the bigger picture in Washington, (firing of the top man in afghanistan is another recent example).
The idea that Obama is anything but another american president is cute, he aint no Jesse Jackson.

May I remind you all of your complete and unrestrained endorsement of Obama and dismissal from folks on my side of the fence that he couldn't be trusted?

Obama made it very clear he wanted to form a 'Civilian Corps' early on; go to here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcm0oAcEey0 and review something my side of the fence caught and you all blew off as 'tin hat' nonsense.

You all voted for him and collectively went down on him like Linda Lovelace and now you're complaining he won't pay you for the trick.

...and to think the 'progressives' want to take away our guns, too! How do you plan on fighting the jackboots if you've taken away our ability to do so??
