How the US army protects its trucks – by paying the Taliban
Insurance, security or extortion? The US is spending millions of dollars in Afghanistan to ensure its supply convoys get through – and it's the Taliban who profit

How the US army protects its trucks – by paying the Taliban

In this grotesque carnival, the US military's contractors are forced to pay suspected insurgents to protect American supply routes. It is an accepted fact of the military logistics operation in Afghanistan that the US government funds the very forces American troops are fighting. And it is a deadly irony, because these funds add up to a huge amount of money for the Taliban. "It's a big part of their income," one of the top Afghan government security officials told The Nation in an interview. In fact, US military officials in Kabul estimate that a minimum of 10 percent of the Pentagon's logistics contracts--hundreds of millions of dollars--consists of payments to insurgents.

Convoy Guards in Afghanistan Face an Inquiry

After a pair of bloody confrontations with Afghan civilians, two of the biggest private security companies — Watan Risk Management and Compass Security — were banned from escorting NATO convoys on the highway between Kabul and Kandahar.

The ban took effect on May 14. At 10:30 a.m. that day, a NATO supply convoy rolling through the area came under attack. An Afghan driver and a soldier were killed, and a truck was overturned and burned. Within two weeks, with more than 1,000 trucks sitting stalled on the highway, the Afghan government granted Watan and Compass permission to resume.

Watan’s president, Rashid Popal, strongly denied any suggestion that his men either colluded with insurgents or orchestrated attacks to emphasize the need for their services. Executives with Compass Security did not respond to questions.

We’re funding both sides of the war,” a NATO official in Kabul said. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was incomplete, said he believed millions of dollars were making their way to the Taliban.

Good old DEXTER FILKINS (NYT article above) will have us believe there's only tangential US responsibility, that it's the Afghan private contractors' doing -- only the locals are capable of staging attacks on themselves or "creating demand". Nary a mention of the fact that US/NATO and Western private contractors are bigger, more numerous, more powerful and have been deliberately training, arming, funding and sanctioning their Afghan counterparts, actively forming private militias, and working closely with them. Not to mention directly funding and aiding Taliban factions themselves, or worse: favored warlords, war criminals and narco entrepreneurs. Not to mention the fact that we are there in the first place and are thus the ultimate cause of everything there, the ultimate demand creation. Afghan citizens get it. The NYT don't.~Gouda

Same shell game it's always been. Get the picture?

The whole story was a whitewash. These SAS officers were agent provocateurs dressed as Arabs to advocate terror. An INSIDE JOB to keep the civil war running and to stay in Iraq. False flag terror at it's best.
