Martian Samizdat
Mars is experiencing global warming. The temperature of the Sun fluxuates, and is increasing. But the main explanation for temperature fluxuations and increases on Earth is human activity. Perhaps we humans really (really) aren't as important as all that. Of course this means we should pollute more and be less efficient - nah, it just means global warming might not be based on human activity. As religion declines, we (as a species) look for other reasons to feel special. We aren't the physical or metaphysical center of the Universe any more, so we look for secular and scientific(ish) reasons to be unique and powerful. The Protestants think we used to live in harmony with nature but our inborn wickedness has caused destruction and will eventually (soon!) destroy the Earth. Radical ecologists, meanwhile, think we used to live in harmony with nature but our inborn wickedness has caused destruction and will eventually (soon!) destroy the Earth.
