International: Say what you think - The importance of giving offence - It is both inevitable and important that people offend the sensibilities of others. By Kenan Malik "If liberty means anything, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." (George Orwell) According to Malik: "Not to give offence would mean not to pursue change." How many are really capable of handling it? In Nietzschean fashion one may ask: "Are you the victor, the self-conqueror, the ruler of your senses and your freedom, able to give and take offence, and pursue change?" (Paraphrazing F.N.)
