What other sign could more clearly indicate the conceptual and cultural schism that has beset our homeland? I think you'll find that there is none. No more deeply ingrained division than this one has been known for generations. No other issue we face in these, the dawning years of the 21st century, demands more serious consideration, greater compromise, and swifter action if our nation is to survive.
All of our forces -- our best minds, our most able and ready resources, the skills and labor of all of our citizens -- must be marshalled and deployed in order to overcome this, the greatest crisis ever faced in the history of Our Most Blessed Union. Have no doubt, my friends: the preservation of our very way of life is at stake.
We must sacrifice, we must be strong, we must be resolute, and, above all else, we must be unified if we are to overcome and obliterate this clear and present danger to our future as a people. We must set the example for the world, because our great nation, indivisible, is the standard bearer and the beacon for those who struggle against the forces of division and conflict.
Know this, my fellow Americans: if we cannot agree on what to call a fizzy beverage, then the terrorists have most certainly already won.
